Recently, I acquired a puppy. This is him:

We got him from the RSPCA, so he came with a name. Banjo. We haven't decided whether we're keeping that name or calling him something else yet. Usually I name my pets after characters I like, but there's nothing I'm into enough right now to name a dog that will hopefully live for over ten years after.

He, his sisters and his mother were taken from their original owner because the kids were seen throwing the puppies down a hill. The lady fostering them said he was a cuddle because he kinda pushes himself against your body and stays still when you pick him up, but since he often avoids getting picked up we think this is probably more of a learnt behaviour to avoid being tossed down hills and shit :/

We don't know exactly what breed he is. We were told Shih Tzu cross, but he kind of looks nothing at all like a Shih Tzu, nor did his mother or sisters. What he does look a great deal like is a Norfolk Terrier. The only real difference is that they don't have white on them like he does.

  • Any guesses as to what breeds he might have in him? Does he look like a Norfolk Terrier to you?
  • Is Banjo a good name? Any suggestions for better names?

I am using either the best or worst icon ever for this comment, can't decide... my sense of irony is tying itself in knots. XD;

OH MY GOD SO CUUUUUUUUUUTE~!! ♥_♥ ...Seriously, screw those kids, man. D:<

I know very little about dog breeds but I do admit my first thought was a terrier of some sort. And I think Banjo is an excellent name, personally!

Hihi I'm good! How are you?
Jun. 20th, 2012 03:56 am (UTC)
I am very excellent! I have a job I love (even if it doesn't pay very much) and I'm house-sitting for my boss for a month which means I get free food, free internet, free television, free Netflix, and a short-term loan of a menagerie of adorable animals that are always very happy to see me. Life's pretty good! :D

That does sound good! I'm on break from uni right now. My neck/upper back hurt and I'm pretty sure it's somehow the puppy's fault...

How is that the puppy's fault?
Jun. 20th, 2012 04:38 am (UTC)
Well, he sleeps with me, so if I was sleeping in an awkward position, it's his fault. Also they are bending down muscles, so they may also hurt from bending down and picking him up constantly because he cannot stairs. I don't know why it would hurt so much more today than on any other day if the latter was the case, though.

SO CUTE!!! Norfolk Terrier seems like a good guess, my first guess was cairn terrier mixed with ???

But definitely not shi-tzu. His fur doesn't look nearly long and kinky and thick enough, and he doesn't have enough of a smooshy face.

Cairn terrier is another possibility, although they have pointy ears and his colouring is more similar to a Norfolk. Cairn terriers have similar face structures as puppies as he does, though the Norfolks do too.

Hmm, good point. I want to huggle him!

Soooooooooooooooooooo cute! I think Banjo is actually a really freaking cute name.

But holy crap the back story on the little guy is so sad T_T WTF PEOPLE LIKE THAT. I want them to be thrown down hills and drowned in the river until they can barely be revived, and see how they like it. FUCKERS. (I threw in the drowning because I think they deserve it)

lol for some reason I keep reading (and thinking) Bojo when I see Banjo. No idea why.

As for his breed-- yeah he doesn't look very Shih Tzu to me, either, but he does look terrier of some sort. How big is he? And how old? Out of curiosity, do you have any pictures of him from the side and standing so his profile/the shape of his snout is visible?

I'm not that great at breeds but I like to guess regardless lol

This one's part side on?: http://i211.photobucket.com/albums/bb307/Potatoe1988/puppy2.jpg

He's ten weeks old. How big... uhhh... smallish? You can see the end of my foot in this one: http://i211.photobucket.com/albums/bb307/Potatoe1988/puppy3.jpg

Hmm... you know, I almost wonder if he has a bit of Corgi in him. His coloring is similar and he has the short little legs and the long tail that curls back down (although his legs look longer than a corgi's, but that could be another breed mixed in)

Of course his ears go down and all but that could be from another breed (and some corgis have floppy ears). The wiry hair seems very terrier.

His face shape is quite different from a Corgi's and the curl of his tail and the colour of his fur match a Norfolk Terrier's. That said, the white bits on the dog at the top are very similar to his. He even has the little white tail tip. So there may be a little Corgi in there... there's certainly something.

Yeah I definitely wouldn't say he's full Corgi based on the pictures but if he's a little mutt he may have a number of breeds intermixed :)

Whatever the case, he's bloody adorable.

Aww, looks like a young version of the dog my mother's friend has, with the fur and the white and the structure of face and ears. Hers is a wire-haired dachshund mixture, but I guess if Banjo grows bigger, that's unlikely. :)

Also, Banjo is not a bad name, I think. More timeless than other stuff. You could try to rename him to Ukulele, but that would only be for kicks, I guess ;D

He isn't shaped anything like a dachshund, so I think that's unlikely.

I could rename him Ukulele and call him uke for short :D

He's adorable whatever breeds he is; such a serious little face though, might be just waryness at the camera but the look on his face is heartbreaking.

No idea how anyone can hurt animals.

That was the first day we got him, so he was still a little shy and nervous of everything. He's pretty bold now, though! The only thing that still scares him sometimes is other dogs barking. Oh, and he'll cry if you leave him alone at all most of the time, but that's just how babies are I guess.
Jun. 21st, 2012 10:21 pm (UTC)
He's learning :) he'll soon have the best seat in the house and you as a loyal human slave, all with a single pityful cry.
Yes. I have a dog.

Well, I've certainly mastered ignoring him for at least a little while after my mum leaves for work and I don't feel like getting up yet. But I can't sleep through all the puppy tears anyway. He's not quiet. Hopefully he'll grow out of that soon...

Good luck with that, my furry monster is nearly four and still knows how to turn on the whiney-whiney tears, to the cat's scorn.
