Possible scene
I may or may not use this scene. I may or may not use the character in it. I have been thinking about it a bit, though, and I like the general idea. Spoilers probably won't be too bad, and I doubt this scene will be anything like the final product, even if I do use the idea.

Mikey was crouched on the ground a short distance away from the van, hand out, beckoning to something or someone that was blocked from my view by a brick wall. Finn was standing behind him, looking nervous and torn, Dusty standing by his side.

"Mikey," I said, very much displeased. "When you promised to stay in the van, I thought that meant you would stay in the goddamn van!"

Mikey put a hand out to stop me, giving me a disapproving look. "Just wait a minute."

Although Mikey sometimes liked to pretend he was stupid, he was anything but. That was the only reason I went to see what he was looking at instead of just grabbing him and dragging him back to the van.

It was a fairly large cat, not a kitten but not yet full grown. It had long fur, a mix of browns and black, that grew even longer around the neck. Complete with large light green eyes that stood out boldly in contrast to its dark fur, it might have looked impressive if it weren't so filthy. Mikey spoke to it in a soft, reassuring voice as it watched him apprehensively.

I sighed. "Leave the cat alone, Mikey. We can't take in every stray we come across."

"It's not a cat," Mikey insisted without turning away from the... well, it still looked like a cat to me, but I could also tell Mikey wasn't lying.

"Looks like a cat," I said.

"Only the bits you can see."

And so I waited while Mikey made soothing sounds and spoke calming words to the thing until finally, it padded over to him and nervously sniffed his hand.

"I think he's going to come with us now," Mikey said, reaching his arms out. Though the cat - or what appeared to be a cat - still looked unsure, it allowed Mikey to pick it up and carry it to the van.

"Great," I murmured, partially to Finn and partially to myself, "exactly what we needed - another pet."
